Katakana is the Japanese alphabet usually used for words from other languages, such as fruit , but that’s not the only time it is used. One particular case where it’s often used is for names, especially made-up names.
This makes katakana the perfect alphabet for Pokémon names, which is why every single Pokémon in the Japanese games is written in katakana. In fact, even the word “Pokémon” itself comes from the katakana ポケモン, which is a shortening of ポケット モンスター (Pocket Monsters).
In this post, I’ve collected the names of every Pokémon in the fourth generation games (Gen IV), which includes Pokémon Diamond, Platinum and Pearl. Some, such as Roserade (ロズレイド) are identical to their English names. Others such as Infernape (ゴウカザル Gouka-zaru - “hellfire monkey”) sound completely different, but actually have similar meanings.
